Caramelized onions are one of those impressive toppings that seem difficult, but they’re actually pretty easy. All you need is a couple onions, olive oil, and one secret ingredient.
Do you know what it is? You’re probably familiar with it…
… at least I hope you are!
It’s patience! Yup, good old fashioned patience. These onions take about 35-45 minutes to prepare. But don’t worry, all you have to do is stir them around every 5 minutes or so just to make sure they’re not sticking to the pan. At the end of those minutes you’ll have gorgeous soft, sweet, caramelized goodness — no sugar required.
Easy Caramelized Onions
- 2 yellow onions
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
1. Slice your onion 1/4″ thick or so. Heat olive oil over medium-low heat and toss onions around in oil. Reduce heat to low.
2. Cook for 35-45 minutes until onions reach your desired level of doneness, stirring every 5 minutes or so. I like mine ever so slightly crunchy on the inside, so I cooked them for about 35.
